Worrying trend sees Newcastle tipped to make January striker signing to avoid derailing season

Newcastle United could be forced into the transfer market after a timely reminder of Callum Wilson’s fitness issues, according to one pundit.

It was reported on Tuesday that the 30-year-old was missing from England training for the World Cup quarter-final with France on Saturday due to a ‘minor strain’.

He was then absent again on Wednesday as he continued his rehab indoors.

Wilson has already missed four games for Newcastle this season, while he was absent for almost half of the last campaign.

And former Hibernian forward Tam McManus thinks Eddie Howe could act on Wilson’s fitness problems in January.’

“This was always going to happen,” McManus told Football Insider.

“It sounds like he has another strain and I think we all knew it was coming. This is Callum Wilson, he’s a brilliant striker but he spends half the season injured.

“Newcastle have Isak as well but he’s injured, Chris Wood isn’t doing it. I just wonder if Newcastle will go into the transfer market again for someone more reliable.

“They don’t want to be left without a capable striker during a period in which they are playing three times a week. It could ruin their season.

“So a move like that wouldn’t surprise me.”

Isak return will be timely Toon boost

Howe is not been helped by summer signing Alexander Isak own injury issues since he joined the club.

Isak looked impressive as he scored twice in three games for the Magpies before suffering a thigh injury.

The irony is that the Swede was brought in to play alongside the injury-prone Wilson but ended up with an issue of his own.

However. the pacy forward is expected to be back in action after the World Cup break.
