Tottenham confident of striking deal for former Man City centre-back as Postecoglou plans massive defensive changes

Tottenham are reportedly growing increasingly confident that they can secure the signing of a former Manchester City centre-back this summer.

Ange Postecoglou has made shoring up a leaky Spurs backline one of his top priorities during the summer window, with a new keeper seemingly already on the way and at least one new centre-back to follow.

The north London outfit are expected to complete the signing of Empoli stopper Guglielmo Vicario over the next 48 hours, with a medical already pencilled in.

The Italian has been described by one Serie A expert as the ‘best goalkeeper in Italy‘ and his £16.2m fee could end up becoming one of the bargains of recent seasons, if he ends up living up to his name.

However, Tottenham also struggled in front of both Hugo Lloris and Fraser Forster last season and Postecoglou is fully aware of where he needs to upgrade his defence.

Eric Dier’s form completely fell away after the World Cup, while Cristian Romero did not look the same player who tasted World Cup glory with Qatar as the wheels completely fell off Spurs’ season.

Davinson Sanchez is expected to be moved on, while negotiations continue with Barcelona over turning Clement Lenglet’s loan switch into a permanent one – although the Frenchman hardly looking a world-beater either.

The likes of Harry Maguire, Marc Guehi, Gleison Bremer and Edmond Tapsoba have all been linked with moves to north London, while a report on Saturday revealed that Tottenham are also keen on Liverpool target Micky van de Ven.

However, Football Insider states that Spurs remain confident that they convince Fulham star Tosin Adarabioyo to join them this summer.

The report claims that while the 25-year-old is not at the top of Postecoglou’s wanted list, the former City defender is still a ‘real option’ for the Australian.

Adarabioyo has just 12 months left to run on his contract at Craven Cottage, leading Tottenham to believe they can snap him up for a cut-price fee.

The centre-back played a major role in guiding the Cottagers to a 10th-placed finish under Marco Silva last season.

He played 29 times, scoring once, and is approaching 200 club appearances having also played for City, Blackburn and West Brom.
