Sources: Newcastle open talks with lethal striker as Magpies move to avert transfer calamity

Newcastle have opened contract talks with striker Callum Wilson over a new deal at St James’ Park, TEAMtalk understands.

Wilson is in the final year of his current deal after joining Newcastle from Bournemouth in 2020. The 31-year-old has been a roaring success for the Magpies since his arrival on Tyneside and played an instrumental role in their fourth place finish last season and subsequent qualification for the Champions League.

Wilson – who has scored twice in Newcastle’s opening four games – scored 18 goals and provided five assists for the club last season.

His overall record in the north east stands at a wildly impressive 40 goals in 79 Premier League appearances.

Wilson has been forced into splitting time since the arrival of Sweden ace Alexander Isak. However, with a European campaign on the horizon, excellent strength in depth is a must for Eddie Howe and co.

The Newcastle boss s a huge admirer of Wilson having worked with the frontman at Bournemouth and Newcastle and we understand he wants to secure the striker’s future on a long-term basis.

Ramping up a new deal’s importance is the fact Wilson has entered the final year of his contract.

As such, the Magpies are in danger of losing one of the top flight’s most clinical finishers for free in nine months’ time.

Understandably, Newcastle do not want to lose Wilson to free agency next summer and hope to iron out a new, long-term deal as soon as possible.

To that end, talks over a new contract are now underway.
