Joe Rodon news: Tottenham star completes Rennes move with permanent fee already in place

Joe Rodon, Tottenham, February 2022,

Tottenham defender Joe Rodon has joined Ligue 1 side Rennes on loan for the 2022/23 season, with an option to make the move permanent.

The Wales international centre-back made nine appearances in all competitions for Spurs last season but was never really considered part of Antonio Conte’s plans going forward.

Rodon actually featured against Rennes for Tottenham in the Europa Conference League in September.

In total he has made just 24 appearances since moving to north London from Swansea in 2020.

Spurs forked out £11million to sign the highly-regarded Welshman. But despite limited game time for the club, it looks like Daniel Levy could make a nice profit from any sale.

Fabrizio Romano claims that Tottenham will receive around £16.7m if Rodon heads to France permanently.

The 24-year-old played a key role alongside team-mate Ben Davies in helping Wales qualify for the World Cup for the first time since 1958 with a play-off victory over Ukraine in June. He has now won 27 caps for his country.

Rodon never given Tottenham shot

Despite being highly regarded when Tottenham snapped up Rodon from Swansea, the young defender was never really given the chance to stake a claim in the first team.

Jose Mourinho was the man in charge when Rodon arrived but successive managers never had faith in the Wales star’s talents.

Rodon is at his best playing centrally in a back three, as he does for Wales. However, Eric Dier has firmly nailed down that role under Conte, leaving the Welshman no option but to move on for regular game time.

Conte previously praised the former Swansea man but was wary of his need to play.

He said recently: “Joe Rodon is another good player. And don’t forget that in November there is the World Cup and many players want to play and play regularly. Also to prepare themselves for this important competition.

“I think that when the thoughts from the club and the players are the same we try to find the best solution for both.”

Well, that solution is France and there is every chance Rodon could earn a permanent stay if he impresses.
